Open-out Box Pouches
Happy Friday! Last week I had the opportunity to do some testing for Aneela Hoey's new pattern, the Open-out Box Pouch. I wanted to share my pouches here today!
I've been picking up fat quarters of black and white prints here and there, and these pouches seemed like the perfect excuse to use some! I played with the idea of a surprise lining, just like I did on Holly's Sew Together Bag. It was fun to choose a pop of color for the insides. Also, did you see this pouch Anna Graham made? Too good!
These pouches have a fun twist when you open them, similar to the Zip-Up Tray Pouch. They also use separating zippers.
I bought my 10" + 14" separating zippers from Zipit*.
I decided to make both the large and small size. I'm a sucker for a set! The exterior prints for both pouches are from Handmade by Bonnie & Camille*. I used a piece of Heath by Alexander Henry* for the gusset on both too.
It's the linings that set them apart! The lining on this large pouch is from Carkai by Carolyn Friedlander*.
The little pouch is lined with a print from Pandalicious by Katarina Roccella*.
Look how cute they look together! They're nesting.
These were fun to put together, and again a very unique construction and function! I've enjoyed stretching my brain with both these pouches and the Zip-up Tray Pouch.

Happy Sewing!
What a useful design! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteNeat!!
ReplyDeleteExtremely useful and so so convenient!
ReplyDeleteI'm working through the pattern and am on the last step -- box corner. What are the seams discussed as "exterior cut out corner"?
ReplyDeleteThat's a question that's best for the pattern designer, Aneela! You can find her email on her website here: http://comfortstitching.typepad.co.uk/about.html
DeleteI bought this pattern when it first came out and had a question on attaching the gussets to the side (step 5/6). I emailed the author and she did not respond. I took the instructions to a retreat this weekend and no one could understand the instructions. Did you happen to take pictures of your steps?
ReplyDeleteHi Lisa--I'm sorry to hear that! I didn't take any photos along the way, apologies. I haven't made any since these two.
DeleteLisa I'm having the same issue. Did you find any help
DeleteHi Lisa--I'd recommend contacting the pattern designer, Aneela. You can find her email address on her website here: http://comfortstitching.typepad.co.uk/about.html
DeleteA thought- I haven't made one of these as of yet, but am pondering the rationale of the zipper. Might it be better served and easier to close[less fiddley] if the zipper was sewn in reverse to what is shown?
ReplyDeleteMaybe! I didn't design the pattern, so I just made it as written!
