Happy Wednesday! Today I'm sharing a free pattern for this Halloween coffin block that I drafted up!
I first went looking for coffin block patterns when I was working on Amanda's Buffy Quilt. Having no luck finding what I was looking for, I decided to draft up a block myself. Deedrie ended up stitching up the block for that quilt when we were at a retreat, by using the templates to hand-piece (so cool).
Fast forward to this Fall, when I decided to make myself some Halloween decorations. I wanted to use the block for a pillow, so it was redrafted to fit within a square and sized down. This is the block I'm sharing with you today.

I made nine blocks and turned them into a pillow for our living room chair! I featured a Halloween print inside each coffin, and used a different blender for each background. I added a strip around all four sides to make it a little bigger (my pillow form is 20").
I quilted a 1/4" around each coffin and then echoed that quilting for the rest of the background. It sort of took forever. But, I'm happy with the result, so that's good! I used 40 wt Aurifil thread in my favorite gray 2600.
I used this awesome bottle print from Spooktacular by Maude Asbury for the back, and I quilted it with diagonal lines. The pillow is finished off with an invisible zipper along the bottom edge so that it's completely reversible. This was my first time using an invisible zipper on a pillow, it's pretty slick looking!

ReplyDeleteHello! I'm new to quilting (not new to sewing) and I'm tackling this project as my first quilting project. For the interior of the case, did you baste and line it or did you leave it as is? You said with the zipper you used that the case was reversible, so I'm curious if it's a different pattern on the inside.
ReplyDeleteHi Jena--For the inside of the pillow cover I used muslin. It does have raw edges. By reversible I meant you could display the front or the back of the pillow, rather than the inside of the pillow cover! Hope that makes more sense.
