Happy Wednesday! I'm excited to be today's stop for The Staple Dress Blog Hop! I've talked about The Staple Dress Pattern by April Rhodes quite a bit on this blog, and I'm happy to be a part of the celebration for the release of the print version!
It's no secret that I love this pattern! I knew I wanted to make an extra special version for the hop. I picked up some lawn from The Sewcial Lounge shortly after the pattern was released and had been saving it for a special occasion. This is the fourth dress I've made using the pattern and it might just be my favorite! You can find my past dresses here, and here.
True to myself, I of course procrastinated in a major way and didn't sew up this dress until Monday. Thankfully it comes together super quickly and easily! I thought things would be foiled by today's rainy weather, but I had a lot of fun playing in the rain to get these shots!
I was reminded that sometimes when things don't work out the way you think they should, there is an opportunity hiding to do something out of the box. Is this what I had in mind taking photos the day before? Not exactly! But thank goodness, because my usual garment photos are a bit boring! Also, good thing my umbrella matched my outfit!
This dress is so wearable, even I will be finding excuses to wear it! And I'm not much of a dress-wearing girl. I'm barely a skirt-wearing girl!

ReplyDeleteI've only just begun sewing for myself, and I'm happiest with the Wiksten Tova and tanks I've made. I had to make several of each to find my perfect fit, and I learned a lot along the way.
Love this dress and it makes me want to sew for myself again. It seems easy and it´s very wearable. Keep my fingers crossed! :-)

ReplyDeleteI basically sewed all my clothes from the age of about 14 till I was about 30. I stopped for awhile but have getting back into it since I bought a serger.
ReplyDeleteIt's such a pretty dress! I haven't sewn any clothing for me in forever, but I have knitted many sweaters and shawls and socks. I guess my favorite garment to work on is a pair of socks. I love the patterning, the back of the heel, the turning to make that adorable little angle so that the sock fits. Love it all.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite garment I ever made is the blue rayon challis dress I made from a Butterick pattern, about 15 years ago!
ReplyDeleteIt fit me perfectly in the bustline and was all on the bias, so it was a pain to cut out but draped beatifully.
It still hangs in my closet, although I no longer wear it because I don't like my arms to show nowadays. It's still totally wearable!
My favorite piece I've sewn is the Laurel dress with floral cotton and eyelet lace down the front. I love your Staple dress especially the color!
ReplyDeleteI really like the evening empire dress by anna maria horner. I am not a clothes-maker, so it was a bit challenging, but it looks nice and not as homemade as my other favorite - the mendocino sundress, which is super easy, forgiving, and comfy.

I've made a lot of clothing for myself and my DD's over the years but my favorite thing I've made is an ice blue silk brocade dress and jacket that I made for my late mother when she remarried in 1963. I was 18 and fearless when I did that!

It had balloon pants....need I say more? :) I've been wanting to make the staple dress for some time but was bummed it was only sold as a PDF. How exciting it is now in print! ReplyDeleteI learned to sew garments in 4-H. Sewed a lot of them back then and then I concentrated on kid's clothing once I ecame an Auntie, then moved on to sewing mainly quilts. This dress makes me think it's time to try my and at seeing a dress for myself again. It looks good on everyone i have seen it on, perhaps it might on e as well.

ReplyDeleteI've sewn my own clothes since I was a youngster (that's many years ago now), but my most favorite piece ever was my Mother of the Bride dress - yes, long skirt, crepe-backed satin, little pearl buttons & loops down the back & a lace overlay on the bodice - that I had to whip up in only 3 days. Why only 3 days? Because JCP lost my mail-ordered dress somewhere and couldn't get me another one in time. Oh well, all's well that ends well.
Nowadays, my favorite things to make are little seersucker dresses for my granddaughters...I get to pull out all the lace, ric-rack and ribbons and have fun!
I haven't done a lot of garment sewing in the past few years, but I'd love to make a few simple pieces. I spotted an ikat print in my LQS last month that I think would be perfect with this pattern!

I don't know why - I am a huge skirt lover and there are so many cute fabrics out there that I want to wear. In fact, every morning when I get dressed I lay out my shirt on my duvet cover that I made and think, I wish I had leftovers of those fabrics because I love that duvet so much I want to wear it!!

I haven't done garment sewing since high school (a long time ago), but I made a green summer dress I made that my husband still remembers.
ReplyDeleteI haven't made any clothing for me in a very long time. I did a lot of sewing for my children when they were small. I learned to sew in high school home economics class. My first project was an apron. I made a pleated skirt and had to model it at a banquet for our mothers. I still have that skirt.

My favorite is a pair of shorts I recently made for my son - it's out of some multi-colored flame fabric that I got at an estate sale. Would love to win this pattern so I could make myself a fabulous dress. Love your dress - the fabric is awesome!! :)

ReplyDeleteI used to sew nearly all of my clothing, but rarely sew clothing anymore. However, my favorite garment that I've ever sewn was a gorgeous wedding dress for my husband's cousin--she's always been more like a little sister to him. I used two patterns--one for the form fitting top of the dress and another for the bottom. It was the first time I had worked with lace, organza, boning, tulle, and satin. It was certainly a learning experience, but also a labor of love. Hopefully, someday her daughter will get married in it too.

ReplyDeleteFor New Years Eve one year, I made a dress that was a redesigned version of a basic fitted sheath dress. It had an open back and since I made it for myself it fit perfectly! I love it because I created the design and was able to turn it into exactly what I wanted it to be :)
ReplyDeleteWow, I have never sewn a garment, but just this morning, after having noticed I spilled bleach on the bottom of the dress I was wearing to work (!), I said to myself, "Self, I'd love to make a dress I could wear to work." It would be so much more interesting than something off the rack. Anyway, you look great in the dress!
