Happy Monday! I hope you all had enjoyable weekends! Mine was a bit busy. Taught three classes at The Sewcial Lounge, grabbed a bite with Michael at Coopers, and did some brainstorming (mostly about Christmas shopping, hehe). I did manage to squeeze in a tiny bit of sewing, but when I was home, I primarily test drove quilts by snuggling under them on the couch :)
Last week I started a new bag! I do love making bags, and so far this one has been a lot of fun. I'm making one of Bari J's new patterns, the Holiday in London Duffle Bag. She had some beautiful versions at Quilt Market that I just couldn't stop thinking about. I'm making mine super scrappy and using a quilt as you go method which means leaving out interfacing and using batting + cotton duck.
I started with Pat Bravo's Rock n' Romance line and pulled blenders and a few other prints in similar colors. I love these colors, lots of purple, coral, fuchsia, and a bit of gray!
I couldn't stay away too long, I started another Wiksten top. Again I'm using the Tank pattern and adding sleeves from Grainline's Scout Tee. Using a lovely voile from Art Gallery for this one!
I did finish a small project last week! Since we have a small apartment, we have a small tree! But, it's PINK! Which of course I love. It's in my craft room, and I decided last week to make it a little tree skirt! Since the tree is pink, I figured the skirt might as well be too! I used my dresden plate template to cut the wedges, sewing them together as cut. I'm really happy with how it turned out. You can see it with the whole tree here!
It snowed today, not enough for it to stick, but still! I love how much cozier it suddenly makes things feel. Also, my Hello Kitty tin collection is growing!
I stopped at a fabric/craft liquidation sale today (If you're in Madison, you can find info here). I managed to find a few goodies. I'm excited to try out the foundation sheet pattern. And I've been eyeing a Q-snap frame for a while!
George is such a sleepy rabbit!

ReplyDeleteJeni, are you planning on using a second panel to line the inside or just leaving the duck exposed? I'm thinking about using this method-- interfacing can be such a pain!

DeleteJeni, what is duck cotton? You mentioned you used it with batting as part of the quilt as you go method. I have never heard of it before- I live in Australia - and am wondering if we refer to it as something else? What purpose does it serve? Sorry for all the questions, but I love the effect of quilt as you go and would love to give it a go.
ReplyDeleteIt is a thick cotton canvas fabric! I'm using it instead of interfacing, with the quilting it gives it structure and stiffness!

Your tree is SO cute! I have been eyeing the tiny pom pom fringe at JoAnn's, trying to figure out something to use it on. I also have bag envy---that would be the perfect knitting bag for large projects. I am working on a Yellow Brick Road quilt in orange, gray, and yellow (I know---sounds like your basic train wreck, but I like the way it's coming together), and I am saving all the tiny bits of fabric I trim away to make a "Sew Together" bag. I bought the pattern on Craftsy, and it's a zipper pouch on steriods. The pattern writer recommends covering the outside fabric with tickertape, so all those little bits will be perfect. I just have to get this quilt finished so I can use the scraps for something else.

I believe you about the tree skirt being pink but on my ipad it came through in a lovely orange color. Really cute and I love the ball fringe. I even went to the flickr pic but the lights on the tree washed out most of the pink color. Elizabeth on Oh, Fransson has a great tutorial on using duck and adding strips to make a tote bag. Your method sounds very similar. I am enjoying your blog and getting lots of ideas. Closing in on present day, then perhaps I can enter your giveaways in real time. N
