Travel Handmade: My Class Outfit

It's time! Travel Handmade is here, with Sewing Summit just around the corner! Travel Handmade is a fun series on all things traveling handmade: bags, travel projects and even garments! Today I'm sharing with you two of my travel handmade projects!

So, here it is! My class outfit! I wanted something special to wear when I teach my class at Sewing Summit, and the Washi Dress pattern by Rae Hoekstra totally fit the bill! I've been wanting to try out this pattern, and I picked up my favorite print from Indie by Pat Bravo last month with it in mind.  I love this print, it has such a Fall feel to it.  It's a great medium scale, and the color is great for clothes.

The pattern is great! Really easy to follow and a pretty quick sew as well.  I cut out the  pieces over the weekend, and stitched it up today.  I think the sewing was around 3 hours, which also included time to eat a peanut butter sandwich!

The fit in the top is perfect!  I was worried about the top, since it is a pretty form fitting style.  I did a quick muslin of the top and ended up making the size that my measurements fell into.  It turned out just right!  I may take a bit off the sides of the skirt, it's a bit too full for me. We'll see how it hangs after I wash it! Chances are I'll just leave this one as is and change the next one!

I'll definitely be making more Washi dresses! I already know I want one that's sleeveless and a few tops as well! You can find the pattern here.

To match my new dress, I figured I needed a sweet clutch for my phone, room key and honestly, some candy! That's what every girl needs during class, right?  I wanted something patchwork-y, but wasn't feeling like improv, so I dove into my craft books for inspiration! I ended up finding a pattern for this sweet pouch in Modern Log Cabin Quilts! It actually has a whole chapter with log cabin bags! So right up my alley!

It's a great size! I quilted it with my walking foot using my favorite color Aurifil thread, #2310 50wt! I love how it almost glitters!  I used prints from Indie for the pouch too!

I am so happy with how my teaching outfit turned out! I love wearing handmade clothes, it's been such an adventure sewing garments! Last year I wore a handmade skirt for my class, so it feels like I'm upgrading with a dress this year :)

Thanks for stopping by today! I hope you'll follow along for the rest of our Travel Handmade series, we're just getting started! You can find all the posts here!

  28. You have done a great job, Jeni. The fabrics on your clutch are beautiful, however, an apple print fabric would have worked just as well; an apple for the teacher!
