Fall Pillow by jenib320

I may have put up my Christmas tree yesterday, but it is still Fall, so I made up this little pillow using some lovely fall colors! I had a 16" pillow form on hand, and had sketched up this pillow pattern using half-square triangles (HSTs) who knows how long ago. It was on a piece of scratch paper in my sewing room. Seemed like a good enough excuse to make a new pillow to me! :)

I started with the 2nd fabric in this stack, the yellow plaid, a print from Happy Campers by American Jane. I then pulled the brown and orange from it. The top fabric, a plaid from Katie Jump Rope by Denyse Schmidt was a last minute addition.

The piecing took a little while since all the HSTs needed trimmed and such, but it still came together pretty quickly. I wanted to echo the plaid prints in my quilting, so I did a few simple diagonal lines in a fun orange thread.

I opted for an envelope closure in the back using Kona Wheat. To give it a bit more weight, I cut the backing pieces twice as long so I can simply fold it in half and top-stitch. This way the entire pillow is lined, and it's double thickness on the back.

I choose this sweet stripe from Wee Woodland by Keiki for the binding that I picked up last week! It was the perfect match for this pillow! As much as I dislike binding, I do like binding on a pillowcase. It just looks so nice. And it's an opportunity to add another fabric, which I'm always up for!

I had a lot of fun making this pillow. I don't use brown very often, I'd like to continue to incorporate it into my projects.

As I was playing around with this pillow, I got to thinking about all the possibilities that HSTs have. I'm thinking about doing a block of the month tutorial series in the coming year, a different HST block each month. What do you think? Anyone interested? :)

Happy Fall!

  11. Good idea about the doubling the back fabric. I always do an envelope closure on a pillow but sometimes the fabric is just too flimsy.
