Scrappy Single Girl Quilt

It's done, yippee! This morning I finally finished up my little Single Girl quilt. I have been fascinated by this quilt pattern for a long time, and when a Single Girl Quilt Along came up last year, I figured it was high time to give it a try.

Single Girl Quilt Pattern by Denyse Schmidt, can be found here.

For me, the best part about this project was choosing the fabrics. I used some of my very favorites in this quilt. I choose a few fabrics from Park Slope by Erin McMorris and then pulled coordinating prints from other lines to go along with them. Read about this process in my Art of Choosing post, Supplementing a Fabric Collection.

Originally I was going to use a single color for the background, but really wanted to try something different. I already had these Kona colors (Cerise, Papaya, Espresso and School Bus) on hand, but not enough of any one to use as the background, so I used all four!

I really had a hard time sticking with this quilt. It uses lots of templates*, which I very quickly got tired of using. I like to get the cutting finished as soon as possible, and the cutting for this quilt is anything but quick. If I hadn't used my favorite fabrics, I'm afraid this quilt may have never been finished! I wasn't very good at piecing the curves either. This was my first time with curves, which was just not a great idea on my part.

*Update 2016: The Free-Wheeling Single Girl Pattern includes guidelines for free piecing the arcs.

I backed it with extra solids and a print from one of Denyse Schmidt's lines for JoAnns. I ran out of the yellow solid.

Thankfully all the fabrics and batting came from my stash, because I blew my budget on thread. I used King Tut #922 Harem for the quilting. I was having a hard time choosing because of all the different colors. This variegated thread was perfect. It has orange, yellow, pink and fuschia in it, I just couldn't leave it behind.

I quilted it with my walking foot, creating the wavy lines by wiggling the quilt back and forth. It's much more relaxing than straight line and I really like the look. It's bound up with a print from Park Slope by Erin McMorris.

I'm really happy with the end result of this quilt. The quilting and a good washing melted away a lot of the imperfections I was worried about. I am excited to find a place on my wall for this quilt.

Happy Quilting!
