Warning: Jam-packed post! Get ready! :)
I have a problem. This is my entire stash of fabric and vintage sheets. I have way too much fabric. An embarrassing amount! I will probably be moving in August, potentially several states away so I really need to get things under control by then. I've joined Stash Pact 11 to help me get on track along with a set of rules for myself!
My Rules:
1. Sew more from my stash and scraps.
2. Try to swap for wanted fabrics whenever possible.
3. Piece backings with stash fabric. It's more interesting and requires less spending. *Only exception is my current flannel quilt.
4. No more buying fabric just because it's on sale.
5. Exception made for finishing up my Park Slope collection (favorite line!), aiming to swap for the missing prints or purchase for less than $8/yd.
6. Avoid purchasing precuts or bundles.
7. Build a better yellow/orange/gray stash either through swapping or limited buying. Small amounts of solids when needed is also okay.
8. Track yardage purchased in 2011.
Are you setting any stash goals for yourself this year?
I have not forgotten about my vow to share my fabric/color selection process as well as how to create a warm/cool quilt! However, every time I sat down to write it up, it got bigger! It has now transformed itself into a full-blown series on fabrics and color. I've dubbed it "The Art of Choosing"! Weather or not it's an art is arguable, but I couldn't think of a better name, haha. I hope to cover a section every two weeks (or less!). The series will include the following sections:
The Art of Choosing
1. Recognizing a Fabric's Overall Color
2. How I Fold
3. Stash Storage
4. Building a Well Rounded Stash
5. Let Go - Organizing Your Stash
6. Building a Scheme Around a Single Fabric
7. Building a Scheme Around a Photograph or Image
8. Supplement a Fabric Line with Stash Fabric
9. Light vs. Dark Color Scheme
10. Warm vs. Cool Color Scheme
Check back soon, the first section will be posted early next week! In the meantime I've created a button for the series, if you're interested you can grab it from the sidebar>>
Finally! To get things kicked off and thank you all for your wonderful support, a giveaway is in order! Two lucky commenters will win an Orla Kiely Pear Reusable Shopping Bag! Eco-friendly and fashionable! :)
One entry per person, simply leave a comment letting me know what you're working on or just say hello! Giveaway closes Sunday at 10pm EST. Please make sure to leave your email if it's not viewable in your profile! Good luck!
Giveaway is Closed! Thanks!
Such a beautiful stash! I really love all of your pictures! Excited for your Series
ReplyDeletetmsatterwhite@hotmail.com
Hi! I love your blog, it's awesome!
ReplyDeleteat the moment, I have entirely too much stash fabric...but it's helped with the projects I'm taking on right now: a baby quilt, a hand pieced hexie quilt, and a quilt as you go log cabin.
thanks for the giveaway!!! :)
I'm quite keen to start charting my stash to (to monitor what comes in and what goes out)! I can't wait to read your new series though - great fun.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to read your new series! I'm totally jealous of your stash :)
ReplyDeleteI'm currently working on a circle quilt and binding another quilt, and of course I'm in the planning stages of a third! Thank you for the giveaway!
you seriously have that much fabric. ah-mazing! love it all.
ReplyDeleteand i've decided i'm making your vintage sheet quilt. i ordered the pattern this morning. i also told them about your quilt. i think they posted a link on their blog.
and i also see you sell vintage material in an etsy shop! amazing! i'll know where to go if i need some additional pieces.
I'm trying to sew from my stash, which isn't as large or lovely as yours but is still sitting there waiting to be used.
ReplyDeleteYou sew so much that I imagine you'll get through your stash rather quickly!
jeni, what a great giveaway! I love that Orla Kiely pear pattern.
ReplyDeleteI have three kids under the age of five, so I have been trying to sew some binding I made on a thrifted pinkish wool blanket for the past two weeks. Simple task. Will I ever get it finished? :)
ReplyDeleteI am really enjoying your blog and wish I had been that creative when I was in college!
Wow I'm so in awe of your stash! I've made similar goals for myself in terms of using up the fabric I've bought already and not buying stuff just because it's reduced!
ReplyDeletelove, love your stash! i'm looking forward to your series! :)
ReplyDeleteproblem with me, is that i have a stash, but i don't get to sew much so it's crazy! i admire so much how you actually SEW! ha ha ha!
what i'm working on: 1) sashiko squares; 2) made by rae lickety split bag; 3) patterns by figgy little woo top. all of these are slowly, but surely coming along. ha ha ha! :)
great giveaway! thanks for the opportunity! :)
Oo!! I used Elsie's Orla Kiely shopping bag once and was sooo bummed to have to give it back. :) *fingers crossed*
ReplyDeleteI'm working on...ripping out the quilting on a queen sized quilt...that was 1/3 of the way done! Ugh. ;)
wow! love your stash! it's so pretty and well organized! i'm hoping to make some progress on my AMH flannels quilt and a quilt for my sister. last year was a slow crafting year for me so in addition to pulling from my stash, i'd really just like to finish more than one quilt this year.
ReplyDeletei love your collection! even though its probably overwhelming. at least its organized
ReplyDeleteI just adore your blog. My secret for controlling my stash is having it on display on open bookshelves, ironed and folded, stops me buying more of the same hwhen I can see what I have. I also de-stashed by making lots of badges with old printed fabrics.
ReplyDeleteAt the moment I'm working on gocco'd hankies, lots to print and a fundraiser for QLD flood victims.
So jealous of your stash! I just finished binding my I ♥ Rainbows quilt and I will be piecing a backing together for my Wonderland quilt tomorrow.
ReplyDeletewow - your stash is so beautifully folded! What a pretty corner.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently making a small lap-quilt adapted from the Purl Bee Wedding Quilt pattern. It is probably the most foolproof quilt pattern ever. No seems to match. I'm also hand quilting a queen-size quilt that I'm making as a wedding gift, and have a good chunk of my hexagon charm quilt started for when I'm on the go.
Love all of your stash busting/cutting back ideas - I've been thinking the same thing! I'm trying to cut back on what I buy and how much; I'm going to try really hard to swap for fabrics and to only buy what I REALLY want and think I'll use (my one exception is solids because I use them a lot)!
ReplyDeleteRight now I'm working on finishing up my next project for Moda - I'm about halfway done the actual quilting but being sick for the last little bit has really slowed me down.
drooling over your stash!! i am currently working on my VERY first quilt! a disappearing nine-patch. :)
ReplyDeleteLove your stash! I also feel the need to round out some of my color selections. I'm working on a pinwheel quilt using plume by moda.
ReplyDeletei love orla kiely- who doesnt? i am working on my first quilt, an OhFransson pattern using Innocent Crush fabrics.
ReplyDeleteam glad i found your blog- the color series sounds interesting. Wonder where the big move will take you
Dang, that first stash picture has me drooling on my keyboard! I am currently working on new and pretty yarny things for my fledgling Etsy shop along with setting down 'weekend ground rules' so I can actually have time to work on projects I started for myself but never finished!
ReplyDeleteJeni your stash is beautiful! At least it's organized, mine looks like a bomb went off up in here. I'd love to join Stashpact, but being pregnant I already have to deprive myself of things (aka wine!) I love, but maybe later this year I'll really reign it in.
ReplyDeleteOK, back to sewing - I'm trying to finish my Kerchief Girl quilt top. And I love Orla - I'm seriously considering buying a hand bag!
oh jeni, I'm so excited about this!!! how cool, can't wait to hear all your info you've put together. I've been looking at my fabrics and need a change!!! and the giveaway, hmm, you know I'd love to win one. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a gorgeous stash of fabric yumminess :) I am currently working on a mini hexagon patchwork - not sure what it will be made into yet.
ReplyDeleteOooh your stash is great!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on some new curtains for my living room. :)
That's some of the prettiest stash I've seen, and so organized!
ReplyDeleteI can't decide which half-done project to work on next, so I went thrifting today instead!
Can't wait to see what you have in store Jenni. Today I got a lot done on a friend's quilt but I ran out of Kona in bone. I couldn't run to the store for more because the roads are all closed in my town from the snow we got here in AL. Tomorrow? perhaps, although school has been canceled for the kids so I don't know that the stores and roads will be open.
ReplyDeleteI am doing the whole 'sew from stash' thing too! I think maybe after the craziness of 2010 with hoarding, selling and buying up to $200/m rare and wanted fabric ie FMF and HR - (not me, though), people may be just relaxing and taking a deep breath and actually looking at what they have and saying; enough already!!!
ReplyDeleteHi Jeni! Great giveaway!! I love your stash and am looking forward to reading your posts about the Art of Choosing!
ReplyDeletehello!
ReplyDeletemy stash is pretty small (especially compared to avid sewers/bloggers/quilters I know), but I'm also prepping for a potential cross-country move, so I spent my winter break going through it all & giving everything a definite project. everything else went to the thrift store!
good luck with your stash rules & thanks so much for the giveaway! :)
I'm working on finishing up a few christmas gifts (quilts) for some friends. Luckily we aren't meeting until next week so that gave me some extra time! Thanks for such a great blog - I love your projects.
ReplyDeleteI'm working on several quilts at once....plus, I'm starting the ORBC round 9 and trying to get into the DQS10. My goal is to use what I have and start fresh with purchases minimally this year, I don't have a ton of fabric, but I have enough to keep me busy for a while. I love your stash...and your blog is brillaint!
ReplyDeleteOh my! I understand why you're setting limits for yourself...but I'm still jealous of that stash! It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic stash! I'm working on some hand stitching on a quilt for my baby girl, finishing off my Tokyo Subway Map quilt and sewing some pretty dresses for my toddler.
ReplyDeleteI'm extremely envious of that fantastic fabric stash!! I've only been quilting for about a year, so my stash is tiny, I'm hoping to build it up little by little. I love your goals for yourself! Your blog is fantastic and thank you for the chance to win!
ReplyDeleteI just cut out an apron that has a real vintage feel to it. Now I just need to find time to sew it.
ReplyDeletersgrandinetti@yahoo(DOT)com
Starting to quilt...hopefully anyway ;)
ReplyDeleteI have a love for fabric and no time to do anythign with it.
britta.zimmer@gmail.com
I particularly love your vintage sheet stash! I havent done much thrifting recently but its fun to see what lovely vintage sheet prints you have scored recently.
ReplyDeletemy current project is putting together play dresses and other clothes to use in imaginary play.
ReplyDeletetwrightgirl at hotmail.com
So jealous of your stash! The colors make me happy. I am currently working on a couple of quilts, one for my baby who will be arriving shortly, and one for his big sister!
ReplyDeleteI am loking foard to your posts! You have a great sash! IAt the moment I try to finish some of my ufo's like last years BOM's!
ReplyDeleteLOVE how bright and colourful your stash is when amassed like that!
ReplyDeleteWOW! Love your blog, your stash and your goals. In 2011 my goals are to use what I have and there is plenty and to finish off the piles of UFOs. Next up is joining up the squares in an applique heart, tulips and leaves quilt. It is all pretty traditional now but the addition of some nice bright stripe which echoes all the other colours should shake that up a little. Right after that will be the toile hatbox a la Kaffe Fassett - again the blocks are done and just need joining and quilting.
ReplyDeleteA big year ahead but I have made a good start.
Thanks for the giveaway!
shelton.jennifer.j@edumail.vic.gov.au
Great giveaway, great post, great series!
ReplyDeleteI can't tell you enough how ridiculously excited I am about this series! I struggle with this all the time. I'm actually currently refolding my stash after the crazy holidays, so I'm eager to read that section.
I'm also very eager to read about the color selection. I started quilting around the same time as you last year, and have yet to make something that's not from the same/entire collection. I'm very nervous to mix/match from different collections, so I've been sticking with using bundles only.
Great idea's Jenny, I will be watching closely and try to get my own fabric stash in order too!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway opportunity, the purses are lovely! :)
I think this will be a great upcoming series. Being new to sewing/quilting, my "stash" currently fits in a large shoebox. haha. So, any of you with stash issues, feel free to donate to my starting out collection! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat up with no gratuitous pic of George?!? LOL! I have several projects to start and 2 to finish. I'm half finished with the quilting on my FIRST QUILT EVER. :) I need to bind a table runner, and then the process starts for 3 large quilts that I hope to complete this year. It WAS supposed to be a full size for both boys and a king for me, but I had to put mine on hold for my mother in law. I'm doing the birdie stitches block of the month quilt for her. She'll love it!
ReplyDeleteTwo things are on my list this week - put the border on a donation quilt made with blocks I won, and organize my sewing room. My fabric needs to be in neat piles like yours! Kathie L in Allentown
ReplyDeleteI love the stash pictures - makes me wish I had a dedicated space to organize mine so nicely! Looking forward to the upcoming series from you. :)
ReplyDeleteI am excited to read through your Art of Choosing series. And you may say you have a problem, but I look at all that fabric and get weak in the knees! I organized my stash last week and wish I had more. =)
ReplyDeleteYour goals are great and seem realistic, although I knwo how hard it is to not buy the new fabrics that are coming out. I'm working on a scrap-busting quilt and a quilt with my 'Dream On' stash.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you'll be doing the art of choosing series-- I've been thinking about value a lot in my quilts lately, and I've been wanting to make a values quilt.
ReplyDeletewhat a fabric stash you have going on there!!! i thought I had problems with mine! lol what I am currently working on is a small quiltie to hang in my studio....right now I am only cutting and measuring the pieces....hope that mountain of fabric stash situation works out for you!
ReplyDelete-Lauren :)
I am hand quilting a baby quilt. I am not allowed to start anything new until this baby is done!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
i am working on some frida khalo items for a show that is coming up in the next few months and some pocket shrines that are for a show in february. great idea to de-stash but so hard to do!
ReplyDeleteI love your fabric stash! I have lots of little projects going on at the moment, next one to tackle is a baby quilt!
ReplyDeleteThose shopping bags are adorable - thanks for the chance to win! I'm working on a quilt but not loving it, so I guess I'm working on "what should I do with this" to avoid tossing it.
ReplyDeleteYour stash is gorgeous! I have a little stash that I need to turn into some projects. Maybe some quilted-type bags? Maybe a stash scrap quilt? :) Thanks for a chance to win! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful stash of fabric! I just finished a foot stool slip cover and am now working on a sewing organization system. :)
ReplyDeleteI have the mugs from the Orla Kiely line, but I never saw the bags. So cute! My address is:
anna{AT}lawrencegirls{DOT}com
I love your stash! I made a pact to myself as well to only buy fabric if it is needed for a project otherwise to bust my stash! I wish that it was more organized as well. Thanks for the giveaway, the bags are very cute! jennalynnsews@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThose Orla bags are so cute! I'm working on a wedding quilt for my sister and her new husband!
ReplyDeleteI also hav e too much stash(who not??????), but I am trying not to buy more;;;;
ReplyDeleteI am working on 3 bags, Knitting a rabbit and preparing the order for a bag ....... So rather busy.
Your fabric stash looks like my yarn stash :) Similarly, I have made the same goals for myself this year. I've already had to repeat several times in my head that "just because it's on sale doesn't mean I need it." Good luck with your goal!!
ReplyDeletewhat a great giveaway! Hope I win!
ReplyDeleteMy stash is out of control but there are so many great options out there that it's hard to say no. I missed out on some great lines either because of when I started sewing or where I was shopping when I first started and I don't want that to happen again! I do think it's time to start using my stash though so I'm trying to think of projects I can work on using my stash rather than lusting over projects I don't have the right fabrics for.
Good luck minimizing!
I think a lot of people will be participating in the Stash Pact - great term! And those Orla Kiely bags are... well, you know ;)
ReplyDeleteOh it's so hard not to stash! If only there was more time I'd be able to get through all my fabrics. LOL!
ReplyDeletemle_mcclendon(at)charter(dot)net
I want your stash!!! lol
ReplyDeleteI am just starting up a stash, and I am going to try to keep it organized from the get-go (cross your fingers for me!)
Remember while cleaning and packing to just focus on one small section of things at a time, don't look at an entire room! (I just moved and was overwhelmed to say the least...)
I think the color choosing part is my favorite. I'm looking forward to seeing your process, for sure.
ReplyDeleteOh my! Your fabric stash is one of the most heavenly I've seen!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat am I working on? Stuff for April is all I can say ;)
I don't think your stash is that bad! I, too, am trying to use fabrics from my stash for all sorts of projects. I cut out all my wedges for my pickledish quilt from Aneela's quilt a long, and I need to get cracking on piecing the wedges!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the opportunity to win a cute tote. Cheers!
Wow! Your stash is breathtaking. Simply lovely. If it was mine, I'd be sitting there stroking all the fabric smiling to myself. dmj53(at)hotmail(dot)com
ReplyDeleteWhen I moved away from Iowa to North Dakota. I had 12+ boxes of fabric and quilting related tools. My stashes only grow bigger. In a year, we'll be moving again and I estimate my boxes would double up! Good Luck if you move and good luck to myself..I love to win.. since I never win anything.. cheers~
ReplyDeleteHoly smokes! You have quite the stash - amazing and awesome! Right now I am working on quilty birthday gifts for my sister and something for my aunt.
ReplyDeleteI am excited about your series! I love even talking about fabric, but fabric + color = heaven. Oh, and Orla for me, please!!!
ReplyDeleteI love Orla Kiely! Thanks for a great giveaway. My stash is a mess... I have no idea what I have. Gives me a good excuse for fabric shopping. :) seaschell AT gmail DOT com
ReplyDeleteHi
ReplyDeleteI bought a whole lot of coin purse frame kits which I am hoping to start on this weekend. My only rule, fabric for the purse must come from my stash. Thanks for the giveaway.

I LOVE your stash, but can see needing to de-stash...although I wonder if I may have the same problem...course that would mean I have to stop buying and I am still having fun with that. Using it up though is way fun too, so I am designing a quilt with some way cute mod fabrics I have. Also, I am planning to work on some table squares using a pattern I found on quilterscache.com it is using a bunch of triangles so I am using a newspaper print product I bought last year at a local shop hop. Guess I should use some before the next shop hop happens, eh? Would love to win this bag, it is oh so cute!
ReplyDeleteOOOh, your stash... candies for my eyes!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm workong on several pojects:
- I'm knitting a pullover for me
- I'm designing some bags for next spring I'm going to sew with organic fabrics for a friend who has a bussines in eco-fashion
- I'm sewing two moleskine covers
- I'm experimenting with patchwork and softies

Hi there!
ReplyDeleteI should be working on a quilt for my sisters 40th (it has already past, whoops!), but I am still struggling with fabric selection, I keep seeing new lines being released and think I might wait for something new. I really need to just start!
Tried to post yesterday from my Iphone, but it wouldn't let me. So lets try this again . . .
ReplyDeleteI have a hard time using from my stash because I worry a project that is better for that fabric might come along. And I like it all so much I hate to see it go. But I can't make a quilt from everything or that would be way to many quilts!!
The art of choosing sounds awesome! I'm always inspired by your stash and projects.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently working on my 4th quilt ever, for my newborn niece. Along with some "big butt pants" for her. Very excited.
I'm very excited to read about the Art of Choosing. I have so many bold patterned fabrics that stay in my stash unused because I can't figure out how to incorporate them into my quilts. I'm anxiously awaiting your words of wisdom!
ReplyDeleteWow that's quite the stash! Our SewMod group is doing a fabric "diet" and I cant wait to hear some of the suggestions you have. The Art of Choosing sounds like a great post! Very interesting!
ReplyDeleteIs it horrible that your stash piles makes me relieved that mine isn't that bad. . . sorry. I'm currently working on Mrs. Frannson quilt along subway map.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win!! (email: sukie80@gmail.com)
Your stash is lovely. Just think of all the things you can make before August! Ooooh, pretty and useful things for your new home. It sounds like you have a good plan.
ReplyDeleteI am commited to using my current stash for projects this year. Like you I have two exceptions, fabric for a Christmas Tree Skirt and necessary supplies.
Just this week I unbelieveably did not have a white zipper for a project with a deadline. I was able to thrift one for fifty cents, woohoo!
Hopefully you are going to share how your progress is going on your stash busting! You are so inspiring.
Woops, momwaldsplace@gmail.com! Gotta get that in my profile.
ReplyDeleteHello hello! Those stacks of fabric are gorgeous!! Right now I'm working on my very first gathered clutch! Anne cnathompson@shaw.ca
ReplyDeleteI love how the colors fit together, that is a beautiful stash :)
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to work on my quilt...Slowly but surely!
Your stash is amazing! I wish I had a stash. Everytime I get fabric, my mother reminds me to not over buy anything, so as of today I do not have any sort of stash. I feel like I'm missing out! Good Luck with it! -Ashley (SpurlockA@Comcast.net)
ReplyDeletewow! that stash is insane and amazing!!
ReplyDeletewhere do you buy the fabrics? could you send me some links if they're online?
and, if you ever want to sell scraps or anything.... ;)
I am totally impressed with your fabric stash! Good luck with the Stash Pact!
ReplyDeletei have a silk patchwork piece in the works. the main idea was to make it a quilt, but basically it has turned into sewing practice.

I have such a pitiful fabric stash..but my yarn stash is quite large.
ReplyDeleteI am totally green with envy!
I am working on my first qulit tp, but with 5 kids..not making much progress.

lynnmariewood@yahoo.com
I really want to dive into that pile of fabric! So beautiful...but I hear you on the woes of too much stash :)
ReplyDeleteLove your blog! Very inspiring and beautiful photos!
Wow-what a stash! I think I'd have to wear sunglasses in your studio!
ReplyDeleteI've made a few goals and intend to be diligent about them this year...problem is it also involves knitting, so my focus is divided!
Love your stuff!
pamelanees@gmail.com
hi jeni! i LOVE reusable shopping bags. i often get teased by cashiers (who hate them because it "makes more work for them") that i need to stop trying to save the world... but it doesn't make me stop using them! <3
ReplyDeletei am currently brainstorming ideas for my boyfriends valentine present (probably going to make a printed & framed photo collage for our house, plus spraypaint a huge letter "e" i found to hang in his man space) & working on finishing touches for my 2011 calendar.
xoxo heather leigh (whileshedreams@gmail.com)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your stash...it's encouraging me to get more serious about shopping my own stash, not buying just because it's on sale, etc.
ReplyDeleteI'm currently working on using my own vintage sheet stash to make a lap quilt. I've been collecting for a while and now have enough to do the whole thing. Thanks for the chance to enter your giveaway!
Jeni, I really admire your vintage sheet stash, you have such a great collection! Good luck with the down sizing as well as the move...sounds exciting!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year, Jeni! My how your stash has grown since we first "met" in Qtr 1 of the 3x6 Bee! I think I'll make this the year of the stash too!
ReplyDeleteIt's OK to have a stash when it's as pleasing to look at as yours! Thanks for offering a giveway!
ReplyDeleteholy stashola! i am working hard on my stash, too, but i definately am working with less (though it's all over the playroom - so much so that the kids don't play in there anymore!!) LOVE orla! elizabethlehman@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteAh! I'm working on a stack of little purse pouches to bring to our annual family visit to Utah next week. Gotta have gifts to give with me! Also dreaming up a pillow design...
ReplyDeletePlease tell me you're moving to San Antonio.
ReplyDelete
